Hiding down a little Melbourne lane was the beautiful L1 Studio, the venue for our HOORAY! workshop on November 30, 2014. This time it was photography 101 with one guy who is extra good at taking pictures, Lakshal Perera. Before the workshop began, the already beautiful studio needed a little more adorning. This was left in the capable hands of Pepper Sprout Hire and Badlands and Co, who arrived early to set up the lovely furniture and exquisite florals. Next to arrive was Lakshal himself, Rebecca from Urban Sparrow, our bubbly photographer for the day, and Suzy from Lovely Day Film, our always-smiling videographer. Finally, one-by-one, our students began to arrive and were soon rifling through their goodie bags, full of gifts from Nude by Nature, Alex Mae, Coco Daydream, Koch & Co, Lakshal Perera and Lux Bite. First on the day’s agenda was a group exercise that showed students how it’s okay to do things your own way. It also proved that it’s pretty darn hard to keep an egg safe when dropped from 4 meters in the air. Next came the actual photo taking part of the workshop. Students were taken through a presentation about camera skills, before being let loose on the streets of Melbourne to practice their newfound knowledge. By the time everyone arrived back at the studio, our delicious lunch had been delivered by Cass from Fig + Salt. The day’s spread included roasted vegetables and caramelised onion rolls, chicken and pistachio baguettes, quinoa and lentil salad, fruit and nut slice, flourless orange cakes with candied oranges and double choc brownies (insane). Following our scrumptious meal was lesson number 2, advanced technical skills and composition. Again, following a short presentation, students went their separate ways to capture the picture of the day. Upon their return, it was straight to the laptops to learn all of Lakshal’s best editing tips and tricks, and after one last lesson on portrait taking, it was time to wrap things up with a quick Q & A session.
