Thursday, March 5th, 2015 | By Rosalie Iannelli
HAPPY MARDI GRAS! Heading to Mardi Gras for the first time? Boy are you in for a treat! It’s probably going to be one of the best parties, if not THE best party, you’ve ever been to. Here’s our guide on what to do and what to expect this weekend. Get ready to be shocked, surprised, enlightened but most of all delighted as you take in all that the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras has to offer! Image via The Seattle Lesbian
What to expect:
Expect glitter! So. Much. Glitter. You’ll leave covered in the sparkly stuff. Photography Kristina Lee Photography
Expect to receive great beauty and hair tips from drag queens, in particular, how to seamlessly put on eyelashes. Seriously, these ladies might be OTT, but they know their stuff.
Expect to get a whole heap of Facebook friend request from people you meet on the dance floor…while you’re still on the dance floor. Photography Butterfly Bones Photography
Expect a drag queen named Coco Bongo (or similar) to become your new BFFL.
Expect to pull an all nighter. It’s pretty much a given, so wear comfy shoes. Photography Kristina Childs
What to do:
Pick an outlandish outfit. The key is to make it bold and bright! We suggest something metallic or sparkly and full of sequins. Oh and matchy-matchy is highly commended.
Attend the parade and after party. There are heaps of events surrounding the Sydney Mardi Gras, and while we recommend going to all, these two are the total musts. Do not miss them! Image via About Australia
Pack a Mardi Gras survival kit. Not only should you take a bottle of water to avoid dehydration (and probably some Panadol), your survival kit should also contain the following: 1 x can of glitter hair spray; 1 x tube of lip gloss or paw paw cream; 1 x compact mirror; loose powder (for touch ups) and; 1 x spare pack of extra long (preferably sparkly) eyelashes.
Take a yoga class. Why? Because you want to prepare yourself for all of the crazy dancing you’ll be doing this weekend. You want to take all necessary steps to avoid pulling or even tearing a ligament.
Lastly, and most importantly, be open, free and accepting and you’re bound to have one of the best nights of your life!
